A 510 cartridge is the closest thing this market has to a universal standard: a threaded oil cartridge that screws onto any battery carrying the same fitting. Almost every brand below uses it, which means one battery runs all of them.
What the 510 Standard Actually Means
The name refers to the threading: five millimetres of thread with ten turns. It became the default because it was never proprietary, so any manufacturer could build to it and any battery would fit.
The practical consequence is that buying a THC vape cartridge is not a hardware commitment. You buy a battery once and change cartridges as often as you like, across brands, without anything becoming obsolete. That is unusual in vape hardware and it is the single best argument for cartridges over sealed disposables.
Choosing a Battery
Any 510 thread cartridge will physically fit any 510 battery, but fitting and performing well are different things. Two things are worth checking.
Voltage range matters most. A battery fixed at a single high output will overheat delicate profiles, and citrus and floral oils lose their character fastest. A variable battery covering roughly 2.5V to 4V handles everything on this site comfortably.
Threading depth is the other. A small number of batteries seat cartridges slightly too deep and press on the centre pin, which causes intermittent contact or leaking. If a new cartridge leaks immediately on a battery that has worked fine with others, that is usually why.
Extract Types
Three fills dominate. Distillate is the most refined and the most consistent, with terpenes blended back after extraction, so the same flavor arrives in every batch. A live resin cartridge uses flower frozen shortly after harvest, keeping the plant’s own aromatic compounds and producing something that tastes closer to the strain but varies with the harvest. Cured resin sits between them, made from dried and cured material, rounder and more stable than live resin.
None is straightforwardly better. Distillate gives repeatability, live resin gives character, cured resin gives body and consistency at once.

Getting the Most From a Cartridge
Start at the low end of your battery and work up. Lower voltage preserves flavor and stretches a gram further; higher voltage gives bigger draws and burns through the oil faster, usually tasting worse doing it.
Store cartridges upright, at room temperature and away from direct light. Laid on their side for long enough, oil creeps into the airway and produces the gurgling that gets blamed on faulty hardware. Standing one mouthpiece-up for an hour clears most of it.
Buying Safely
Packaging is copied cheaply and well across every popular brand. Check seals and print consistency, but treat a clean-looking box as a first filter rather than as proof. How Long a 510 Cartridge Lasts
A one-gram 510 cartridge runs roughly 300 to 400 draws, which for most people is two to four weeks. Voltage is the largest variable by some distance: the same cartridge empties in half the time on a high setting, and tastes worse doing it.
That figure matters when comparing prices. A cartridge and a sealed disposable are not really competing on sticker price; they are competing on cost per draw, and the cartridge wins once the battery is paid for.
Clogging and Maintenance
Thicker oils clog more readily than thin ones, and the usual symptom is a cartridge that pulls hard and produces little vapor despite being visibly full. Warming it in your hand for a minute loosens the oil, and a few gentle draws with the battery off will normally reopen the airway.
It is also worth cleaning the battery contact occasionally. A cotton bud with a little isopropyl alcohol on the threads clears residue that builds up and causes weak or intermittent connections. Let it dry fully before reattaching.
Which Cartridge to Start With
If you are buying your first 510 cartridge, pick a well-known strain over an invented flavor name. Established genetics carry consistent reputations, so prior experience transfers and you have a reference point for everything you try afterwards.
Beyond that, pick by plant type rather than flavor. Indicas suit evenings, sativas suit daytime, hybrids sit between. Narrowing that way cuts the decision down faster than reading every listing.
