Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), also called acid, is a hallucinogen. It changes thoughts, feelings and awareness of your surroundings, and many people see or hear things that aren’t there. As little as 20 micrograms produces an effect. In pure form it’s a clear or white, odorless crystal that breaks down under ultraviolet light.
LSD doesn’t appear to be addictive, though tolerance builds with repeated use. Adverse reactions are possible, including anxiety, paranoia and delusions. Some people get distressing flashbacks long after use, a condition called hallucinogen persisting perception disorder. Deaths are very rare and usually come from accidents while under the influence.
About 10 percent of people in the US had used LSD at some point as of 2017, and 0.7 percent had used it in the past year. It was most popular from the 1960s to the 1980s. It’s usually swallowed or held under the tongue.
LSD was first made by Albert Hofmann in 1938 from lysergic acid, a chemical from the ergot fungus. He discovered its hallucinogenic properties in 1943. In the 1950s the CIA tested it on people, some without their knowledge, in a mind-control program called MKUltra. It was sold for research under the name Delysid in the 1950s and 1960s, and the United Nations listed it as a Schedule 1 controlled substance in 1971.
LSD is sold in several forms:
- Blotter paper: sheets of absorbent paper with printed designs, soaked in LSD and cut into single-dose squares. This is the most common form.
- Thin gelatin squares, often called windowpanes.
- Small tablets (microdots) or capsules.
- Liquid on sugar cubes.
- Pure liquid, which can be extremely potent.
Uses of LSD
Recreational LSD Use
Most people take LSD recreationally.
Spiritual LSD Use
LSD is considered an entheogen: it can bring on intense spiritual experiences where people feel in contact with a larger spiritual or cosmic order, and some report out-of-body experiences. In 1966 Timothy Leary founded the League for Spiritual Discovery with LSD as its sacrament. Stanislav Grof wrote that mystical experiences in LSD sessions read much like those described in the scriptures of the major religions.
LSD and Medical Use
LSD currently has no approved medical uses. It has been studied in clinical research, but it isn’t approved to treat any condition.
Effects of LSD Use
LSD works on serotonin receptors in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in mood, behavior, the senses and thought, which is why LSD changes all of them.
Effects vary a lot from person to person, and there’s no telling in advance whether a trip will be good or bad. They usually start 30 to 45 minutes after taking it, peak 2 to 4 hours later and can last up to 12 hours. Common effects include:
- hallucinations
- distorted shapes and colors
- altered sounds
- anxiety or depression
- a fast heart rate, higher body temperature and high blood pressure
- dilated pupils
Mood can swing hard. Large doses cause delusions and strong visual hallucinations, and an overdose can lead to severe psychosis. Deaths are usually from injuries while under the influence. There is no known lethal dose of LSD.
