Hawaiian Magic Mushrooms, usually sold as PES Hawaiian, are a strain of Psilocybe cubensis. The name is a bit misleading. They aren’t native to Hawaii; they got popular through Pacific Exotic Spora (PES), a spore vendor based there.

The fruiting bodies are medium to large, with broad caps that go from light to dark brown as they mature. Stems are sturdy and white, and they bruise blue when handled, a sign of psilocybin. If you like this one, also take a look at our Malaysian Magic Mushrooms.

Origin and Genetics of Hawaiian Mushrooms

Pacific Exotic Spora developed and distributed the PES Hawaiian strain, which is where the name comes from. Psilocybe cubensis itself grows wild in subtropical and tropical regions around the world, usually on cow and horse dung. The exact lineage of PES Hawaiian is proprietary, so all anyone can say for sure is that it’s a cubensis. Another strain we stock is Makilla Gorilla Magic Mushrooms.

Effects of Hawaiian Magic Mushroom

The effects come from psilocybin and psilocin. Users commonly report:

  • Visual and auditory hallucinations: brighter colors, patterns and sounds.
  • Euphoria: a lifted mood and a strong sense of well-being.
  • Introspection: more self-awareness and philosophical thinking.

Potency is considered moderate to high, so PES Hawaiian suits intermediate and experienced users. Dose, setting and your own body all change how it hits.

Cultivation: How to Grow Hawaiian Magic Mushrooms

1. Strain selection. Get a spore syringe or print of PES Hawaiian from a reliable supplier so you know the genetics are what the label says.

2. Substrate preparation. These mushrooms like nutrient-rich substrates:

  • Brown rice flour (BRF) and vermiculite: the usual PF Tek mix, and a good place for beginners to start.
  • Manure or coco coir: preferred for bulk grows.

Sterilize the substrate in a pressure cooker or autoclave to kill contaminants.

3. Inoculation. Once the substrate has cooled, inoculate it with the spores. Work clean: a laminar flow hood or a still air box helps.

4. Incubation. Keep the jars or bags somewhere dark at 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C). The mycelium usually takes 2 to 4 weeks to colonize, depending on conditions and substrate.

5. Fruiting conditions. After full colonization, move the substrate to a fruiting chamber with:

  • Temperature: 70°F to 75°F (21°C to 24°C).
  • Humidity: 85% to 95%.
  • Light: indirect natural light or low-intensity artificial light on a 12-hour light/dark cycle.
  • Fresh air exchange: regular ventilation so carbon dioxide doesn’t build up.

Mushrooms usually start forming within one to two weeks.

6. Harvesting. Pick them just before the veil under the cap breaks. Handle them gently, since bruising costs potency.

7. Drying and storage. Dry them soon after harvest, ideally in a food dehydrator on low. Once they’re fully dry, store them in airtight containers away from light and moisture.
